In a statement on Thursday, July 24, the DFA said, “the Philippines does not take any position on this dispute but underscores the importance of maintaining open lines of communication and ensuring the de-escalation of the situation.”
“We are hopeful our two fellow ASEAN member states will resolve this issue in accordance with international law and the peaceful settlement of disputes,” it added.
The DFA urged both countries “to extend due consideration and care to innocent civilians who may be affected by the ongoing conflict.”
While it continues to monitor the situation, the DFA assured that it is “ready to extend all possible assistance” to Filipino there.
On Thursday, Thailand launched airstrikes against Cambodian military targets along their long-disputed border.
An attack by Cambodian forces, on the other hand, has reportedly killed 12 people—11 civilians and one soldier.
The two countries have been pointing fingers on which side started the fighting as relations collapsed to their lowest levels in years.
