- Torre's supposed 9 a.m. practice at the Philippine National Police (PNP) gym at Camp Crame in Quezon City on Thursday, July 24, was suddenly cancelled after President Marcos called for a meeting for an update on the ongoing relief and rescue efforts amid the widespread flooding in Metro Manila and various parts of the country.
While a video of acting Davao City Mayor Sebastian “Baste” Duterte supposedly training for boxing has been making rounds on social media, national police chief Gen. Nicolas Torre III apparently does not have the same liberty of time.
Torre’s supposed 9 a.m. practice at the Philippine National Police (PNP) gym at Camp Crame in Quezon City on Thursday, July 24, was suddenly cancelled after President Marcos called for a meeting for an update on the ongoing relief and rescue efforts amid the widespread flooding in Metro Manila and various parts of the country.
The meeting was held at Camp Aguinaldo in Quezon City at 9:30 a.m. on Thursday.
As the country’s top cop, Torre is expected to brief the President on the role of the PNP in the national government’s efforts to attend to the needs of over 2.7 million people affected by the heavy downpour since last week.
“The boxing practice of the Chief PNP was postponed as he is expected to attend a meeting with the President at 9:30 a.m. at Camp Aguinaldo,” PNP spokesperson Brig. Gen. Jean Fajardo said.
News of the boxing march between Torre and Duterte erupted on traditional and social media on Wednesday, July 22, after the PNP chief accepted the challenge for fistfight.
But Torre said he wants it to be a charity boxing match, the proceeds of the money from sponsors and pay-per-view through donations of those who would watch on social media would be given to the victims of widespread flooding.
Torre also said the boxing match should be at the Araneta Coliseum in Quezon City on Sunday, July 27—or an entertainment show before President Marcos’ 4th State of the Nation Address (SONA) the following day.
Baste Duterte’s hatred towards Torre runs deep—which started when the latter sacked all police commanders in Davao City for alleged sloppy response on calls for police assistance supposedly misreporting crimes to make it appear that the City is safe when Torre was still the regional director of Police Regional Office 11.
Duterte then threatened to slap Torre over the incident.
It was Torre who also led the arrest of Kingdom of Jesus Christ leader Apollo Quiboloy, a staunch ally of the Dutertes.
And it was also Torre who led the serving of arrest warrant that led to the detention of Baste’s father, former president Rodrigo Duterte, to The Hague in the Netherlands
But for Torre, nothing is personal—including the boxing match which he said is an opportunity to maximize the funds to assist those displaced and affected by the weather disturbances since last week.
It is not immediately clear at this point if Baste Duterte agreed to the boxing match challenge by Torre.
