Jor-El Espina presents a collection inspired and guided by Patis Tesoro

Fashion designers taking inspiration from different forms of art and facets of culture is nothing new. But designers creating works in homage to a fellow designer is rare—and tricky. When done the right way, however, it not only presents the highest form of respect but also becomes an artistic dialogue across time.
Jor-El Espina
That is exactly what fashion designer Jor-El Espina aims to present through his latest collection. Dubbed “Heirloom,” the collection is inspired and guided by the Grand Dame of Philippine Fashion, Patis Tesoro.
The idea struck Jor-El in 2024 when he was invited by the ladies of Artefino, one of the leading local fairs in the Philippines, to visit the legendary designer’s home in San Pablo, Laguna. What followed became Jor-El's version of “Adventures in Wonderland” as he explored Patis’ works, textiles, and penchant for artisan techniques.
Patis Tesoro and Jor-El Espina
“Patis showed me her archive of fabrics and told me to apply them to the pieces that I’d be making.” Jor-El tells Manila Bulletin Lifestyle.”I used them as accents to the hand-painted piña, inspired by her designs.”
In addition to his one-on-one discussions and workshops with Patis, Jor-El also turned to the designer’s book, “Filipiniana is Forever,” as his North Star in creating the collection. Although many of the techniques—like weaving, needlepoint, and embroidery—were already familiar to him, seeing them through the eyes of a master helped Jor-El refine his aesthetic and deepen his craft.
“As an emerging designer, working with her made me realize that I still have a lot to do,” Jor-El muses. “She is full of wisdom and creativity, and she never lacks strength. I admire her passion. Collaborating with her is one for the books.”
On July 15, 2025, the Lobby Lounge of Shangri-la Makati returned to its tradition of hosting intimate fashion presentations by hosting the preview of the “Heirloom” collection. Gracing the aisles of the lounge were contemporary and playful takes on Filipinowear through multifunctional garments such as peacoats, parkas, skirts, drop-waist dresses, cover-ups, kimonos, and piña tops. Each piece was crafted using local textiles and adorned with patchwork, embroidery, hand painting, among others.
Patis’ sensibilities can be seen in the color palette and hand-painted details, while Jor-El’s aesthetic shines through in the modern silhouettes and layering. One standout example of their design duet was a green sheer jacket with floral appliqués and drawstrings to help cinch the waist—just the right touch of fab and functionality.
“Heirloom” will be available at ArteFino Fair, running from July 31 to Aug. 3, 2025, at The Fifth at Rockwell, Makati City. The collection is part of Jor-El’s 20th anniversary celebration. Later this year, he plans to mount a charity show showcasing archival and reimagined works, along with more collaborations that celebrate Filipino artistry.
