Manila City Health Officer Dr. Grace Padilla has confirmed that two individuals have died from leptospirosis in the city, as of July 24.
According to Dr. Padilla, the local government continues to closely monitor cases of the disease, especially during the rainy season when flooding increases the risk of infection.
"For the City of Manila, with regards to leptospirosis, dalawang hospital po namin ang nagca-cater dyan ang at Sta. Ana Hospital, Ospital ng Maynila, and according to our reports, as early as now, mayroon po kaming five cases sa Sta. Ana Hospital at three cases sa Ospital ng Maynila, but unfortunately, mayroon na rin po tayong mortality na dalawa (Two of our hospitals are catering to these cases, Sta. Ana Hospital and the Hospital of Manila. According to our reports, as early as now, we already have five cases at Sta. Ana Hospital and three cases at the Hospital of Manila. Unfortunately, we have also recorded two deaths)," she stated.
Health authorities are reminding the public to avoid wading through floodwaters, particularly if they have open wounds, as this is a common way for the leptospira bacteria to enter the body.
The City Health Office is urging residents to seek immediate medical attention if they experience symptoms such as high fever, body pain, headaches, or yellowing of the skin and eyes, common signs of leptospirosis.
Efforts to combat the spread of the disease, they said, are ongoing, including the distribution of prophylactic medication and the dissemination of public health information in flood-prone areas.
