At least 12 people died while nine others were reported missing amid the heavy rains that continue to pound and trigger widespread flooding in almost all parts of the country since last week, the Philippine National Police (PNP) reported on Wednesday, July 23.
The PNP data covers incidents since the onslaught of tropical storm “Crising” that pounded the country with heavy rains, and eventually triggered massive flooding in Metro Manila and other parts of the country.
PNP chief information officer Brig. Gen. Randulf Tuaño said the biggest number of casualties were due to drowning—five fatalities were reported in Calabarzon (Cavite, Laguna, Batangas, Rizal, Quezon) while three were reported in Negros Island Region.
Two more fatalities due to drowning were reported in Mimaropa (Mindoro Oriental and Occidental, Marinduque, Romblon and Palawan) and Metro Manila.
On the other hand, Tuaño said two people died after they were pinned against a tree that fell down in Northern Mindanao and Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM).
Five people were also reported missing due to flash floods in Metro Manila, three in Western Visayas and one in Calabarzon.
As of Tuesday evening, the PNP also reported over 144,000 individuals from 39,426 families in various evacuation centers across the country.
Tuaño said evacuation centers are among the areas being secured by over 4,000 policemen tapped to assist local government units in disaster response.
He said over 6,000 more cops were placed in standby across the country for any eventuality.
Tuaño said police forces were also tapped to conduct search and rescue operations and asd of Tuesday night, he said a total of 382 individuals were rescued from rising floodwater.
Four cadavers of the 12 reported fatalities, he said, were retrieved by police search and rescue teams.
Meanwhile, Tuaño also reported almost 300 PNP personnel were affected by the weather disturbances.
