Mayor Francisco “Isko Moreno” Domagoso received the approved resolution from the City Council Wednesday afternoon, July 23, placing the entire capital under a state of calamity due to the successive heavy rains and widespread flooding caused by Tropical Storms Crising and Dante, as well as the southwest monsoon (habagat).
With the resolution now in effect, the city government is shifting its focus to urgent relief and recovery efforts.
Immediate funding will be allocated to provide hot meals, essential supplies, and temporary shelter for evacuees.
The resources will be allocated for flood prevention operations, including extensive declogging of drainage systems and clearing of waterways.
Domagoso revealed that he had formally requested on Tuesday, July 22, an emergency session of the City Council to approve the declaration.
"Nagpapasalamay po tayo kina Vice Mayor Chi Atienza, Majority Floor Leader Councilor Mon Yupangco, at sa lahat ng miyembro ng Konseho ng Maynila sa kanilang mabilis na pagtugon (We thank Vice Mayor Chi Atienza, Majority Floor Leader Councilor Mon Yupangco, and all the members of the Manila City Council for their prompt response)."
With this approval, the city government can now tap into emergency resources to address the urgent needs of affected residents.
Relief operations and cleanup efforts are now underway, with coordination between the Mayor’s office, local agencies, and barangay units.
More assistance measures are expected to roll out in the coming hours, the city government said.
