Grandpa drowns while saving grandson in Ilocos Sur

CABUGAO, Ilocos Sur – A man drowned while saving his grandson in Barangay Pug-os here on Tuesday, July 22.
Police identified the victim as Nestor R. Viriña, 66, a resident of Barangay Quezon, Cabugao.
Investigation said the victim and grandsons Darrel James Montero dela Cruz and Joshua Castillo were swimming at the beach when Castillo was taken by the strong current.
The victim rescued Castillo but both were swept away by the strong current.
Dela Cruz sought help from residents who were able to rescue Viriña and Castillo.
Viriña was taken to a hospital where he was declared dead.
