DILG suspends classes, gov't work in Metro Manila
The Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) announced the suspension of classes at all levels in both public and private schools in Metro Manila on Thursday, July 24, due to the expected heavy rains caused by the combined effects of Tropical Storms Emong, Dante, and the enhanced southwest monsoon.
The agency made the announcement following weather forecasts warning of widespread rains and possible flooding.
Class suspensions have been declared in Metro Manila, as well as in the provinces of Bulacan, Laguna, Rizal, and Cavite.
On Wednesday, July 23, the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) said that Dante and Emong have begun interacting as they draw closer to each other, a weather phenomenon known as the Fujiwhara effect.
Due to this interaction, PAGASA expects intensified habagat rains across several areas until the weekend.
The enhanced monsoon activity, combined with the direct effects of Emong, is likely to bring moderate to torrential rainfall, particularly over the northern and western sections of Luzon.
