6 dead from 'Crising,' 'habagat' in Negros Occidental

BACOLOD CITY – Six persons, including two Persons with Disability (PWDs), were killed during the onslaught of tropical cyclone “Crising” and the southwest monsoon or “habagat” in Negros Occidental last week.
The fatalities were an 84-year-old PWD who drowned in Binalbagan town on Thursday, July 17; a 12-year-old boy suffering from epilepsy who also drowned in Binalbagan on Saturday, July 19, while crossing an overflow bridge; a 44-year-old resident of Barangay Cabadiangan, Himamaylan City who went missing after crossing an overflow bridge on Friday, July 18, and his body recovered on Sunday, July 20;
A 30-year-old fisherman, Glen, who went missing for four days was found dead at Panal Reef, Sagay Marine Reserve Area in Barangay Molocaboc, Sagay City, and two persons fatally electrocuted in Barangay Talacagay, Hinoba-an, on Thursday.
The Negros Occidental Operations Center announced on Tuesday night, July 22, that the province is under blue alert status due to tropical depression ‘’Dante.’’
The red alert status of the Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council Emergency Operations Center shall remain in effect for close monitoring and coordination and is concurrent with the prevailing Alert Level 3 over Kanlaon Volcano.
Meanwhile, a newborn baby boy was found dead here on Tuesday afternoon.
Police Capt. Andy Ofalia, head of Police Station 9, said the baby was found at the back of the Material Recovery Facility (MRF).
The infant’s umbilical cord and placenta was still attached, and he was placed in an uncovered casserole when found by a garbage collector.
Police coordinated with the barangay for the baby’s burial.
In Kabankalan City, a 40-year-old laborer was gunned down over illegal drugs in Barangay Tabugon on Monday night, July 21.
Police Lt. Col. Roberto Indiape Jr., Kabankalan City police chief, said the victim JR was show by two men after playing basketball.
Recovered from the crime scene were a live ammunition, a fired bullet, five .45 caliber cartridge cases, and improvised glass tooter. A search of the victim’s house yielded empty plastic sachets of suspected shabu.
The victim survived an attempt on his life last year and was allegedly involved in theft cases in the barangay but no official complaints have been filed against him.
Police have the identities of the gunman and his accomplice.
