The House of Representatives is 90 to 95 percent ready with its preparation for President Marcos' fourth State of the Nation Address (SONA) on July 28.
Thus, said House spokesperson, lawyer Princess Abante on Monday, on July 21 exactly a week before the annual event.
Monday coincided with the final inter-agency coordination meeting between House, Senate, and Malacañang officials for the SONA. Abante attended the meeting.
"From the discussions that I heard earlier, siguro mga nasa 90, 95 percent na tayo ready (I think we're 90, 95 percent ready), leaving room for some adjustments...but yeah, we are very much prepared for the SONA by next week," Abante said in response to a reporter's question during the presser.
"The House of Representatives conducted earlier its final coordination meeting to iron out the other details for next week's SONA and I'm happy to announce that most of the preparations are already finalized," she noted.
Abante added: "We're all set. We are looking forward for the President’s report to the country."
Presiding over the coordination meeting--and subsequent final walkthrough at the House of Representatives--was House Secretary General Reginald Velasco. He shared key preparation details during the gathering.
"We have completed our guest list and we have already sending out or distributing our invitations to the concerned individuals today. We have almost filled up the seat in the plenary hall. We're just waiting for the names to be plotted in the seats," he told the attendees.
Velasco also said that like in years past, separate SONA "viewing rooms" were also set up within the House.
"We have established three viewing halls. At the Romualdez hall, having a 290 seating capacity; RVM room 7 and 8, with 70; De Venecia hall, with [an] 80 people capacity. Almost all these viewing rooms are built," he said.
"The medical teams in the House of Representatives complex, as well as those in strategic areas around it have been properly coordinated and are ready," Velasco added, giving more insight to the preparations.
Around 1,500 guests expected
As to the number of guests for this year's SONA Abante said the House, the annual host, expects around 1,500 people.
"Last year I think that was one of the most attended SONA we've had in recent history. If I remember, around more than 1,500 last year yung nag-confirm na mag-attend (confirmed their attendance). And we are expecting that the numbers will be similar to that."
She says she has "no exact figures" on the number of invited guests, which will include current and past government officials, foreign dignitaries, and surprise guests.
Abante says the all-important SONA security measures "[have] already been finalized".
"It would be more or less the same as last year. Of course there will always be adjustments on various situations or concerns. But just the same, the security group are all prepared for next week's SONA," said the lawyer-spokesperson.
Asked if authorities were looking out for specific threats during the SONA, Abante answered in the negative. "Sa ngayon wala naman akong alam specifically na binabantayan (Right now, I don’t know of any specific threat)."
The President delivers the SONA--which pundits describe as a "report card to the nation"--every year at the House plenary hall before a joint session of Congress.
