The Philippines stands to benefit from higher connectivity that meets the demands of artificial intelligence (AI) as a regional consortium of telco players, including Globe Telecom Inc., plots course for a new submarine cable system.
In a statement, Globe said it is representing the Philippines in the consortium that will finance the Asia United Gateway East (AUG East) subsea cable.
The 8,900-kilometer AUG East cable will feature a high-count fibre pair system and the latest submarine fibre optic technologies.
Poised to deliver stronger network reliability and additional bandwidth, the cable system will provide the bandwidth capacity required by big tech enterprises, equivalent to streaming millions of ultra-high-definition movies simultaneously.
The AUG East will connect Singapore and Japan, with landing points in the Philippines, Brunei, Malaysia, South Korea, and Taiwan.
The AUG East consortium, chaired by Singapore’s Singtel, also includes Arteria Networks (Japan), Chunghwa Telecom (Taiwan), Dreamline (South Korea), Telekom Malaysia (Malaysia), and Unified National Networks (Brunei), as well as United States-based Amazon Web Services and Microsoft.
AUG East Chairman Alan Tan said the cable system is the industry’s response to the growing demand for high-capacity digital infrastructure along the East Asia region.
“This investment will play a critical role in advancing digital inclusion and catalysing economic growth across the region,” said Tan.
Last week, the Singtel-led consortium announced that NEC Corp. will build the AUG East.
The target completion date of the project is during the third quarter of 2029.
Globe President and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Carl Cruz said the company’s participation in the endeavor is a reflection of its commitment to strengthening the country’s digital infrastructure and AI-driven innovation.
Citing the study of research firm Omdia, Globe stated that traffic from AI and AI‑enhanced applications will surpass conventional usage by 2031.
The company stated that this necessitates a greater investment in technologies that support demand.
Cruz said the AUG East will serve as a new data superhighway that will strengthen the country’s digital backbone.
“It gives businesses the scale, speed, and reliability they need to compete globally and embrace technologies that can uplift lives and drive inclusive progress for all Filipinos,” he said.
The telco’s enterprise arm, Globe Business, expects the new cable system to position the Philippines as a competitive hub in the digital economy.
“By securing our stake in this vital digital thoroughfare, we are proactively enabling our enterprise clients to leverage cutting-edge technologies, drive innovation, and expand their global reach,” said Globe Business Vice President Raymond Policarpio.
