LPA forms east of Luzon; rainy weather to persist due to 'habagat' — PAGASA
A low-pressure area (LPA) has formed east of Luzon, while the southwest monsoon (habagat) continues to bring persistent rains across large parts of the country, the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) said on Monday, July 21.
As of 3 a.m. Monday, the LPA was located 1,140 kilometers east of southeastern Luzon. It developed into an LPA on Sunday evening, July 20.
PAGASA weather specialist Daniel James Villamil said the weather disturbance currently has a low chance of developing into a tropical cyclone within the next 24 hours.
It is forecast to move northwestward before turning northward toward the northern boundary of the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR).
“For now, the LPA remains far from the Philippine landmass and is not expected to directly affect the country,” Villamil said.
However, he added that the main concern in the coming days is the continued impact of the habagat.
On Monday, moderate to heavy monsoon rainfall (50-100 millimeters) is expected in Metro Manila, Pangasinan, Zambales, Bataan, Cavite, Batangas, and Occidental Mindoro.
Occasional light to moderate rains may also prevail over Ilocos Region, Benguet, Tarlac, Pampanga, Bulacan, Laguna, Rizal, and Oriental Mindoro.
Scattered rain showers and thunderstorms are expected for the rest of Luzon, Visayas, Zamboanga Peninsula, and Northern Mindanao.
The southern portion of Mindanao will experience partly cloudy to cloudy skies with isolated rain showers or thunderstorms.
On Tuesday, July 22, heavy to intense rains (100-200 millimeters) are expected over Zambales, Bataan, and Occidental Mindoro.
Moderate to heavy rains will continue in Metro Manila, Pangasinan, Ilocos Sur, La Union, Tarlac, Pampanga, Bulacan, Cavite, Batangas, Rizal, Antique, Iloilo, Guimaras, and Negros Occidental.
On Wednesday, July 23, heavy to intense rainfall is expected to persist in Zambales, Bataan, and Occidental Mindoro.
