10 Bulacan towns placed on alert as Bustos, Ipo dams release excess water
Ten municipalities in Bulacan have been placed on alert due to the overflow of Bustos Dam and the water release from Ipo Dam, according to the Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (PDRRMO) headed by Manuel Lukban Jr.
Lukban reported that as of Sunday afternoon, Bustos Dam overflowed with a volume of 412 cubic meters per second (cms) or approximately 13.517 feet of water.
The overflow was primarily caused by the damaged rubber gate No. 5, which broke in May 2020, and the opening of other gates (Nos. 1, 2, 4, and 6). The situation worsened with water inflow from mountain tributaries.
As of 8 a.m., on Monday, July 21, Ipo Dam also discharged 65.7 cms of water, prompting flood alerts in the following towns:
Norzagaray
Angat
San Rafael
Bustos
Baliuag
Pulilan
Plaridel
Calumpit
Paombong
Hagonoy
Residents and local DRRMCs were advised to stay vigilant for possible flash floods and landslides.
Lukban clarified that Angat Dam has not released water as it still has about 20 meters of reserve capacity before reaching its spilling level.
The public was urged to monitor further updates, especially with the risk of rising waters due to high tide.
Meanwhile, in Hagonoy, where floods were worsened by rain and high tide, Mayor Charo Sy-Alvarado mobilized barangay officials to distribute relief goods to evacuees in several barangays:
Sto. Niño – 28 families
San Agustin – 6 families
Palapat – 1 family
Tampok – 2 families
Sy-Alvarado emphasized that the relief goods were personally funded by her and other public servants, not from government funds.
She also encouraged municipal officials to assist in relief efforts.
