Senator Mark Villar seeks the integration of road safety education into the K to 12 curriculum
Amid growing public concern over the increasing number of road crashes in the country, Senator Mark Villar has introduced a bill mandating the integration of road safety education into the K to 12 curriculum.
The move comes in response to alarming global and national statistics. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), 1.19 million people die annually due to road and traffic-related incidents. In the Philippines, many of these accidents—frequently involving minors—have made headlines and sparked calls for stronger preventive measures.
Citing data from the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA), which reveals that children and teens are increasingly involved in road crashes, Villar emphasized the importance of introducing road safety lessons at an early age.
The proposed measure aims to equip students with practical knowledge of traffic rules, pedestrian safety, and responsible behavior as future drivers or commuters. Villar believes that teaching these values early on can help shape a more disciplined and safety-conscious generation.
This initiative is part of the senator’s broader commitment to enhance road safety in the Philippines, using education as a long-term solution to reduce fatalities and injuries on the nation’s roads.
