Over 40,500 tons of garbage have been collected in Manila since June 30, according to the city government, as part of intensified clean-up operations aimed at addressing persistent flooding in the capital.
Manila Mayor Francisco "Isko Moreno" Domagoso urged all 896 barangay officials to actively continue participating in the city-wide "Clean-Up Day" campaign.
The initiative is a key part of his broader efforts to mitigate flooding, particularly during the rainy season.
As part of the anti-flood strategy, the city has also installed trash traps in various creeks and waterways.
These include areas such as Infanta Bridge in Velasquez, Tondo, where floating garbage has long contributed to clogged drainage and water overflow.
Domagoso emphasized that keeping waterways clear is critical to reducing flood risk and called on residents to cooperate by properly disposing of their waste and supporting community-led clean-up drives.
The city’s Department of Public Services continues to work around the clock, coordinating with barangay units to ensure that waste collection and drainage clearing operations remain on track.
