NIA-Bulacan IMO reiterates integrity, safety of Bustos Dam
The National Irrigation Administration–Bulacan Irrigation Management Office (NIA Bulacan IMO) on Saturday, July 19, reiterated the integrity and safety of Bustos Dam after the public’s attention was once again drawn to its condition during Typhoon Crising.
It was recalled that in recent months, the said office had successfully taken preliminary steps in the rehabilitation of Rubber Gate No. 3, which collapsed on the first day of May at around 2:30 in the afternoon.

This included the installation of approximately 223 steel sheet piles, each 12 meters long, covering a total width of 87 meters. This is part of the coffer damming process to ensure the stability of the dam during ongoing repairs.
Currently, the rubber gates of Bustos Dam, including Gate No. 3, remain uninflated and unaffected as part of the routine maintenance conducted annually. The continued decrease in water level from the dam is due to the natural flow from the Angat River and rainfall runoff, not due to any spillage from the rubber gates.
Based on regular monitoring, as of 4:45 p.m. on Saturday, July 19, the dam elevation was recorded at 15.50 meters—clearly within the safe range.
The NIA Bulacan IMO emphasized that it continues to focus on ensuring the security and structural condition of the Bustos Dam. The office urged public cooperation and called for the responsible sharing of information to prevent fear caused by fake or unverified news, particularly in communities surrounding the dam.
For official announcements and updates on the status of Bustos Dam and other irrigation-related matters, the public is advised to follow only the official statements released by the NIA.
Meanwhile, the Hagonoy Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (MDRRMO) called on the public to remain calm regarding the gradual release of excess water from Ipo Dam at around 7:00 p.m. on Saturday. The release
was done only to maintain the dam’s normal water level.
“It's true that we are among the towns affected by dam releases, as we are located at the end of the Angat River (Labangan Channel),” MDRRMO officials said.
As of 8:00 a.m., the recorded water levels were as follows:
* Ipo Dam: 100.50 meters (below the spilling level of 101.00 meters)
* Bustos Dam: 15.88 meters (spilling level is 17.00 meters)
* Angat Dam: 194.10 meters (below the normal high water level of 212.00 meters)
Heavy Rainfall Warning No. 21, issued by PAGASA at 5:00 a.m. on Sunday, July 20, placed Bulacan Province under the yellow rainfall warning, along with Bataan, Zambales, Metro Manila, Pampanga, Rizal, Cavite, Batangas, Laguna, and Quezon.
The public and concerned Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Offices are advised to closely monitor weather developments and await further warnings.
