Mark Magsayo seemed to relish the spotlight during the weigh-in for his 10-round super featherweight bout against Mexican Jorge Mata Cuellar.
But the crowd and attention weren’t exactly for him—or for his fight. Still, if he delivers on fight night, his own title shot—and the limelight that comes with it—may soon follow.
A world title opportunity could be just around the corner for the pride of Tagbilaran City, as a win over Cuellar on the Pacquiao-Barrios undercard this Sunday, July 20 (Manila time), at the MGM Grand Garden Arena could push him closer to a crack at the WBC 130-pound crown.
According to MP Promotions president Sean Gibbons, a WBC title eliminator awaits Magsayo if he successfully retains his No. 2 ranking following the bout.
“If Mark Magsayo is victorious, he will be fighting in the WBC final eliminator, so this is a big moment. If Mark is to win, he needs to win in good fashion, and he’ll put himself on the verge of a world title,” said Gibbons.
Should he prevail, the 30-year-old Magsayo (27-2, 18 KOs) is expected to face Italy’s No. 3-ranked Michael Magnesi, with the winner earning a shot at current WBC title holder O’Shaquie Foster.
Despite the high stakes, Team Magsayo remains focused on the task at hand: defeating Cuellar.
“For now, we’re focusing on the fight against Cuellar. This is our stepping stone to a world title, so we’re going to give him a good fight,” said Magsayo.
“It’s a great opportunity for sure. I prepared for this fight like never before,” he added.
