LTO launches online driver's license renewal for OFWs in Japan
Hundreds of overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) are expected to avail of the online driver’s license renewal as the Land Transportation Office (LTO) launched the program in Osaka, Japan on Saturday, July 19.
Acting Assistant Secretary and LTO chief, Greg G. Pua, Jr. said the Online Driver’s License Renewal Serbisyo Caravan in Osaka, Japan is the second global launching of the online platform for driver’s license renewal after it was first launched in Taiwan in September last year.
“We expect at least a thousand of our kababayan to avail of our serbisyo caravan. Part of this initiative is an information drive that includes teaching our kababayan in Japan how to use the online platform for driver’s license renewal,” said Pua.
“This is also a continuing process of checking the usual glitches in order to improve the system and the feedback from our clients here in Osaka in order for us to come up with the best way to make the entire process fast and comfortable,” he added.
In pushing for the online platform for driver’s renewal, Pua said documents must be first readied and uploaded to the system in order to expedite the entire process, particularly the medical certificate provided by an LTO-accredited telemedical facility and the image of the expiring driver’s license.
Once the OFW has paid the renewal of its license, LTO will then print its license card and notify him once the card is ready for shipping.
Pua, on the other hand, reminded OFWs to use a bigger device like a laptop or tablet for the proper conduct of the exam which involves actual test of the telemedical exam, adding that the exam could be done in 10 minutes.
Once the requirements are completed, he said OFWs can have their driver's license delivered through accredited courier services.
From the initial application of the OFW until the delivery of the license card to the appointed foreign address in Japan, the entire process can take anywhere from three to five days.
The LTO is targeting to expand the digital services to other parts of the world in the soonest possible time, particularly in the Middle East, United States and Europe.
