Did you know most of your child's growth happens by age five? Here's why it matters

Why the first five years are critical for your child's development

As parents, we want nothing more than for our kids to grow up healthy and strong. But what many may not realize is that the first five years of a child’s life are critical for growth and development. This was a key insight shared during the launch of PediaSure Plus by Abbott, a science-backed nutritional milk supplement specially formulated for children aged three to 10 years old.
PediaSure Plus ambassadors Cheska Kramer and Dimples Romano, Abbott’s Nutrition medical director Dr. Jose “Doc Jun” Dimaano Jr., pediatric gastroenterologist Dr. Jennifer Olay, and Abbot senior clinical scientist Dr. Mandy Ow.

Make it count
“Nutrition during early childhood, especially the first five years, supports not just physical growth but also builds strength, resilience, and immunity,” explains pediatric gastroenterologist Dr. Jennifer Olay. By age five, about 60 percent of a child’s adult height is already set. Nutrition influences nearly 80 percent of this growth, while genetics only account for about 20 percent.
If key nutrients are lacking during this period, catching up later can be difficult. That’s why early, consistent nutrition is essential.
Eating well isn’t enough
A balanced diet includes a variety of food groups that includes grains for energy, proteins for muscle development, dairy for strong bones, and colorful fruits and vegetables for vitamins and minerals. But many Filipino children tend to eat more rice and little on protein and dairy, which creates nutritional gaps that slow growth and weaken immunity.
“Children need a balance of at least five out of seven food groups daily to support healthy development,” says Dr. Olay. “Missing even one or two can affect growth over time.”
Fill in the gaps
Even if children eat well, they might not absorb enough nutrients. That’s where research comes in. “Certain minerals like calcium, iron, and zinc can be difficult to absorb,” explains Dr. Mandy Ow, a senior clinical scientist at Abbott. “Ingredients like casein phosphopeptides help make these nutrients more bioavailable, supporting stronger bones and better immune response.”
Celebrity mom and PediaSure Plus ambassador Dimples Romana shared her personal experience during the event, “When Elio (her youngest son who is now three years old) was younger, I always worried if he was getting enough nutrients—even if he eats a lot. As a mom, it’s really hard to know if you’re doing enough. That’s why learning more about balanced meals and how science can support our kids' growth really empowered me.”
Track and act
Dr. Jose “Doc Jun” Dimaano Jr., Abbott’s nutrition medical director, emphasizes, “Early intervention is key. Using simple tools like growth charts or online calculators helps parents track their child’s progress and act promptly if something’s off.”
Regular visits to the pediatrician can make a big difference. They can track your child’s growth using standardized charts, catch early signs of stunting or nutritional gaps, and guide you on next steps—whether it’s adjusting their diet or exploring supplements if needed.
Cheska Kramer, PediaSure Plus ambassador and host for the event, sums it up well, “It’s not just about feeding your kids, it’s about feeding them well and knowing they’re on the right track.”
