On July 14, I visited the famous Pinoy Big Brother’s house, Bahay Ni Kuya, in Quezon City. This was my second visit to this popular home, which is filled with the energy of memorable moments showcased on TV.
On this day, the air buzzed with anticipation as I, along with other media guests, was about to meet the newest Kapamilya housemates, fresh from their riveting journey on the reality show. The excitement and stories filled the house, creating a lively atmosphere. This home has seen many dreams and friendships grow over the years.
Kapamilya housemates who shared their experiences inside the house were River Joseph, Kira Balinger, Esnyr Ranollo, Klarisse de Guzman, AC Bonifacio, Emilio Daez, Bianca de Vera, Xyriel Manabat, and Ralph de Leon.
On March 9, the iconic PBB house opened its doors at its new home, GMA Network, with the premiere of “Pinoy Big Brother Celebrity Collab Edition.” This groundbreaking collaboration between GMA Network and ABS-CBN Studios promised a season filled with exciting surprises and unforgettable moments as PBB celebrated its 20th anniversary.
After four months, Brent Manalo and Mika Salamanca, known as BreKa, clinched the Big Winner title of “Pinoy Big Brother: Celebrity Collab Edition,” making history as the first Kapuso-Kapamilya duo to win in the show's special season.
Following BreKa, RaWi (Ralph de Leon and Will Ashley) was named the Second Big Placer Duo, each taking home ₱500,000. They were followed by CharEs (Charlie Flemming and Esnyr Ranollo) in third place, each receiving a prize of ₱300,000. AZVer (AZ Martinez and River Joseph) rounded out the Big 4 in fourth place, receiving ₱200,000 each.
“PBB Celebrity Collab Edition” marked a new era as the first season to include celebrity housemates from ABS-CBN’s Star Magic and GMA’s Sparkle. This season was launched to celebrate the 20th anniversary of PBB. It introduced a new format focused on pairs and teamwork across networks.
During the lively media conference, each Kapamilya housemate eagerly shared their heartfelt excitement and the valuable lessons they absorbed while living together in the house.
Faces brightened as they shared unforgettable moments and personal growth. The housemates also announced that they were preparing for a special concert dubbed "The Big Collove," which will be held at the Araneta Coliseum on Aug. 10.
Near the end of the press conference, the housemates got thrilled when Director Laurenti Dyogi made a surprise appearance to thank them for joining the PBB.
"Thank you so much for showing courage and vulnerability while you were at Kuya's house. This will serve as an inspiration to our televiewers," the director said in Tagalog.
The atmosphere shifted dramatically when Director Laurenti subtly suggested that the future of the PBB house hangs in the balance, leaving everyone in a state of uncertainty and apprehension.
"Keep the experience in your core memory. We don't know how long this house will last. And this won't last for a long time," he added.
In 2023, it was reported that the PBB house in Quezon City was for sale. ABS-CBN is selling this well-known property, situated directly across its headquarters. A real estate brokerage firm is managing the sale. The property, which comprises the house itself with a 1,300 sqm floor area, is being promoted for potential residential or commercial redevelopment.
The PBB house has become an integral part of Filipino pop culture, serving as the backdrop for the reality show over many seasons. Its sale has been likened to "the end of an era" by many who fondly recall the cherished memories it held.
Yet, amid the bittersweet nostalgia, Director Laurenti remains optimistic, envisioning a brighter future as he sets out to discover a new, more vibrant location for the show that may even elevate the experience to new heights.
I felt a bit sentimental as I left the PBB house after the mediacon. I'll miss the place, even though I have only been inside twice. I'm confident that Kuya and his team will find a bigger and better home for future housemates. Thank you, Kuya, for having us.
