Social media personality “Cherry White” turned over her driver’s license to the Land Transportation Office (LTO) on Friday, July 18, after she attended a hearing of her case for reckless driving.
White, whose real name is Cherrylyn Gonzaga, apologized after a video of her unsafe driving went viral on the internet, leading to the suspension of her license for 90 days.
The LTO earlier sent a show cause order (SCO) to Cherry White. The same SCO placed the vehicle she was using in the viral video under alarm.
Acting Assistant Secretary and LTO Chief Greg G. Pua Jr. said White admitted her mistake and cooperated with the agency’s Intelligence and Investigation Division during the probe.
He expressed hope that White would learn her lesson and be a road safety advocate from now on, stressing the impact of her influence to her followers online.
“We in the LTO appreciate the humility on the part of Ms. Cherry White. As a popular social media personality, we hope that we would find an ally in her in promoting road safety,” Pua said.
Pua explained that road safety is a serious issue, citing cases of fatal road accidents every year.
Viral video
During the investigation, White said that she posted the viral video of her unsafe driving in her Instagram account around three months ago.
The video showed White while driving along the road in Cainta, Rizal. What was unusual was that she was seated in a casual or lounging posture with one leg raised onto the driver’s seat.
White explained that the video went viral after it was re-uploaded by another netizen recently, a common tactic nowadays to quickly attract views and followers, which can then lead to earning money through content monetization.
White said that she received online backlash following the circulation of the viral video.
In an apparent attempt to ease the situation, she admitted to taking advantage of her virality by posting content suggesting how she could assist LTO personnel with intimate whitening treatments.
“She, too, apologized over that comment and said it was due to the intense bashing she received online,” Pua said.
Mr. Renante Melitante, head of LTO-Intelligence and Investigation Division (IID), asked White to be responsible on social media, particularly in her content related to road safety.
White, in response, promised to do so, including doing a post to inform her followers not to imitate what she did in her viral video.
The LTO gave the camp of White until Monday next week, July 21, to submit the necessary documentation for the vehicle she was using during the incident.
