A 56-year-old man accused of fatally stabbing a Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) personnel in Tondo has surrendered to authorities, the Manila Police District (MPD) confirmed on Thursday, July 17.
The suspect, identified only alias “Nivy,” a native of Cebu City and resident of H. Barrio Menu Street, Barangay 49, Tondo, turned himself in to MPD-Special Mayor’s Reaction Team (SMarT) chief Police Major Edward Samonte.
His surrender came following a manhunt operation launched after the incident.
According to MPD-CIS Homicide chief Police Major Dave Garcia, the incident occurred around 2:45 p.m. on July 13 on Dagupan Street, Barangay 48, Tondo.
The victim, Rosauro, 55, a member of the MMDA Demolition Team and resident of the same barangay, was reportedly buying from a store when the suspect approached him.
An argument quickly escalated, during which the suspect repeatedly stabbed the victim. A CCTV camera in the area captured the brutal attack.
Residents told investigators that both men had known each other since childhood and had a long standing feud.
Police are eyeing personal grudge as the primary motive behind the crime.
Following the stabbing, the suspect fled the scene. Members of MPD Moriones Police Station 2, under Lt. Col. Gilbert Cruz, immediately conducted a follow-up operation.
Simultaneously, operatives from the MPD-SMaRT unit, led by PMaj. Kherwin Evangelista and PCapt. Edgar Julian, carried out a separate operation.
With the help of an informant, authorities caught the suspect hiding in a temporary shelter on Oroquieta Street near Recto Avenue in Sta. Cruz, Manila.
The suspect peacefully surrendered and was brought to the MPD-SMaRT office at Manila City Hall, where he was positively identified by a witness.
His arrest was made under the supervision of MPD-DIMD officer-in-charge Police Lt. Col. Damaso Burgos.
Police revealed that the suspect had recently been released from detention on drug-related charges. He is now facing a murder charge and is currently detained at the Homicide Section of MPD headquarters.
