Good-looking, good-natured, and good for legislation.
That, in a nutshell, were La Union 1st district Rep. Paolo Ortega V's first impressions about the newest clique in the lower chamber, the "House Hotshots".
Ortega--now an established member of the erstwhile new clique, the "Young Guns"--said he was able to interact with the Hotshots during a recent dinner in Malacañang.
"Pogi yung mga bata, ang gagandang lalaki. Pero ano, mahahalata mo rin na…actually ang babait nila, saka nag-i-engage talaga sila (They are good-looking young men. But you can also tell that they are very kind, and they really engage with everyone)," the Ilokano said.
The Hotshots are composed of Tingog Party-list Rep. Andrew Julian Romualdez, 25; FPJ Panday Bayanihan Party-list Rep. Brian Poe, 33; Batangas 6th district Rep. Ryan Recto, 29; Negros Occidental 3rd district Rep. Javier Miguel "Javi" Benitez, 30.
Like the Young Guns before them, the Hotshots are neophyte solons who are brimming with promise and personality.
Ortega sounded impressed by the quartet's eagerness to show their worth as legislators.
"Parang marami na rin silang plano, not as a group, pero individually. Kinausap naman nila yung mga ibang Young Guns, kinausap nila, parang marami silang gustong isulong (It seems like they each have their own plans, not as a group, but individually. They’ve talked to some of the other Young Guns, they’ve reached out, it looks like there’s a lot they want to push forward)," he said.
The only question right now in the 20th Congress is, will the Young Guns let the Hotshots outdo them?
Based on Ortega's remarks, there's really no competition between the two factions.
"Sabi ko dun sa mga kasama namin, sabi ko parang mas pogi itong mga ito sa atin ha. Sabi ko, hindi bale, sabi ko mas malakas naman yung appeal natin (I told my companions, I think these guys are better looking than us. I said, it doesn't matter, I said we have stronger appeal)," he said tongue-in-cheek.
