ZAMBOANGA CITY – Work and classes here were cancelled on Thursday due to heavy rains and strong winds from tropical depression “Crising” and the southwest monsoon or “habagat.”
Acting Mayor Maria Isabelle Climaco, officer-in-charge after Mayor Khymer Olaso left for the United States, announced the class suspension at around noon.
School administrators were advised to take precautions in sending their students home to ensure their safety, a post from the City Government of Zamboanga said.
Climaco called off work at the local government starting at 3:30 p.m. due to unpredictable weather, with the exception of offices giving frontline and emergency services.
Hundreds of residents fled to evacuation centers due to Crising.
Climaco called an emergency meeting as the City Social Welfare and Development Office said that 25 barangays were affected. At least 100 families evacuated to safer grounds.
Passengers were stranded at the seaport and commercial areas after public transportation stopped operations due to heavy rain and flooded streets.
A yellow rainfall warning was hoisted over Zamboanga City and the Zamboanga Peninsula region.
Almost all power feeders here went off due to heavy rains and strong winds.
The National Grid Corp. of the Philippines (NGCP) implemented an unscheduled power interruption in several parts of Zamboanga City starting at noon.
It affected the 69KV-line Pitogo-Tulungatung serving Recodo and Ayala substations, 69KV-line Pitogo San Jose serving San Jose substation, the 69-KV line in Tumaga serving Cabatangan and Camanchile substations, and the 69-KV Zamboanga line serving Sangali and Putik substations.
Affected feeders include Pasonanca, Tumaga, Guiwan, Presa, Tetuan, San Roque, Veterans, Santa Catalina, Arena Blanco, Guardia Nacional, Aclem, Gov. Alvarez, Campaner, Nuñez, Mercedes, Curuan, Culianan, and Fishing Port.
