Classes suspended in some Region 8 areas due to 'Crising'
TACLOBAN CITY – Several local government units (LGUs) in Eastern Visayas suspended classes on Thursday due to heavy rains dumped by tropical depression “Crising.”
These LGUs were the towns of Naval, Almeria, Culaba, Cabucgayan, Kawayan, and Caibiran in Biliran province; and Baybay City, Matalom, Matag-ob, Palompon, Villaba, Tabango, and Leyte towns in Leyte province.
Aside from suspension of class, tourism-related activities were also suspended in major island destinations in Leyte due to the weather disturbance – Kalanggaman Island, Cuatro Islas, and Canigao Island.
Crising suspended sea travel, which stranded 60 trucks in the ports of Maasin, Benito, and Padre Burgos in Southern Leyte province, according to the Philippine Coast Guard Eastern Visayas district.
Due to moderate to heavy rainfall that will affect the region, the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical, and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) warned of possible landslides and flooding due to overflow in major rivers and tributaries, such those in Biliran province; the Sangputan, Palo, Solano, Daguitan Marabang, Cadac-an, Bongquirogon, Salug, Pagbangahan, Pagbangahan, and Binahaan Rivers in Leyte; the Oras, Dolores, Ulot, Taft, Boronganz Suribao, Llorente, Balangiga, and Sulat Rivers in Eastern Samar; the Bisay, Himbangan, and Pandan Rivers in Southern Leyte; the Catarman, Bugko, Pambujan, Catubig, Palapag, Mayo, and Gamay Rivers in Northern Samar, and the Basey, Silanga, Calbiga, and Jibatan River in Samar province.
The PAGASA rainfall outlook indicates that heavy to intense rainfall is expected to persist in the provinces of Eastern Visayas region.
Meanwhile, several local government units (LGUs) in Surigao del Norte and Dinagat Islands provinces have suspended classes due to the trough of Crising.
Surigao del Norte Gov. Robert Lyndon Barbers issued a localized class suspension order for the province on Thursday morning.
The order grants LGUs, from barangay up to city and municipal levels, the authority to suspend classes based on PAGASA advisories and their local assessment.
Local school officials may also suspend classes under Department of Education Order No. 22, Series of 2024, which revises guidelines for suspending classes during disasters and emergencies.
“When the province declares localized suspension of classes, this means the local chief executives or school heads are authorized to suspend classes, if needed,” Daryll Gomez, chief of the Surigao del Norte disaster management operation center, said in a local radio interview.
As of Thursday, Surigao del Norte LGUs Gen. Luna, Dapa, Santa Monica, Del Carmen, Claver, Placer, Sison, Mainit, Alegria, and Tubod canceled classes from kindergarten to high school.
In Dinagat Islands, the LGUs of San Jose, Tubajon, Libjo, Basilisa, and Dinagat also suspended classes for the safety of schoolchildren. (PNA)
