'May plaka na!' LTO rushes to distribute over 7 M remaining motor vehicle plates

The Land Transportation Office (LTO) has started downloading all the motor vehicle plates for distribution to their rightful owners a day after it announced that the millions of backlog in license plates, which hounded the agency in the past 11 years, was already wiped out.

Acting Assistant Secretary and LTO Chief Greg G. Pua, Jr. said all the agency’s regional directors and unit heads were already instructed to implement measure that would expedite the claiming process of the owners of the license plates.

“We are now focusing on the distribution of the license plates to their rightful owners in compliance with the directive of the President (Marcos) to expedite the distribution process,” said Pua.

Based on the LTO data, a total of 7,244,926 plates are set for distribution—the figure represents the remaining backlog of license plates since the plate problem started in 2014. 

As of the latest data, a total of 1,799,206 license plates were already distributed to the LTO regional and district offices. 

On the other hand, the 5.4 million license plates, almost all of them are for motorcycles, are now on their way to LTO regional offices for distribution to the owners.

In the past two years, the LTO ramped up the printing of the license plates and was able to produce more than 18 million license plates. The plates covered the backlog, the replacement plates and even for the newly-bought motor vehicles.

Since last year, the LTO has instructed all regional directors to implement measures to expedite the delivery of license plates. Some of the LTO offices sought the assistance of local government units while some initiated home delivery of license plates.

Pua directed all regional directors to expedite the distribution process but also encouraged motor vehicle owners to use the LTOTracker, a digital platform that  provides access to its clients to track the status of their driver’s licenses and motor vehicle plates in real time.

The LTOTracker comes with the capability to have the license plates delivered straight to the motor vehicle owners' doorsteps through an accredited courier service provider. 

But he said owners could also pick up their plates to the LTO office where they registered their vehicle.
