CEBU CITY – Gov. Pamela Baricuatro expressed frustration over the several fire safety violations discovered in the two key buildings inside the Capitol compound.
“This is a safety issue. We always talk about progress but our very own seat of power is not even complying with a simple fire protection mechanism,” Baricuatro said in a press briefing on Wednesday, July 16.
Upon the request of Baricuatro, the Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP)-Central Visayas conducted a fire safety inspection at the Capitol complex last week.
The result of the inspection showed several fire safety violations, Baricuatro said.
According to the BFP, the Capitol and the Legislative Building are considered hazards after failing to meet standard fire prevention protocols.
Among the violations cited were the lack of an automatic fire sprinkler system, the absence of fire detection and alarm systems, no alternate fire exits, and the use of substandard fire exits.
The BFP also noted the improper storage of hazardous materials in electrical rooms.
At the Capitol building, the BFP recommended an overhaul of its electrical system, additional fire exits, and the installation of emergency lights.
The BFP found out that the Legislative Building, which houses the Provincial Board, has defective fire suppression and detection systems while fire exits were also obstructed.
Replacement of faulty equipment and putting up of illuminated fire exit signage were recommended.
Baricuatro said fire safety is a top priority at the Capitol. She assured that the province has enough funds to implement the necessary safety upgrades.
“We will comply with all the recommendations. This is about ensuring the safety of our employees and the public who visit the Capitol for important transactions,” the governor said.
