The Manila Police District arrested a 62-year-old man accused of stealing P80,000 in cash from a 79-year-old passenger inside a jeepney in Manila.
CCTV footage captured the suspect, dressed in a white T-shirt, boarding a jeepney along Taft Avenue.
When the vehicle reached the Lawton area, he was seen hastily disembarking, quickly crossing the road, and boarding an e-tricycle.
According to the Manila Police District, the victim told the authorities that he was unaware that he had been pickpocketed during the ride.
It was only when he was getting off near Carriedo that he discovered the cash was missing.
MPD Station 5 officers immediately responded to the complaint and began a backtracking operation based on the CCTV footage.
The following day, the suspect was tracked down and arrested inside a mall in Quiapo.
Upon his arrest, authorities recovered only P40,500 of the missing cash.
A sock believed to have served as the victim’s improvised wallet was also seized from the suspect, along with a balisong or butterfly knife.
The police added that the man had previously been imprisoned for a similar crime.
During the initial investigation, the suspect claimed that the amount he took was P70,000, not P80,000.
The MPD disclosed that the suspect spent over P29,000 shortly after the incident.
The suspect is now in the custody of the Ermita Police Station and has been formally charged with theft and concealing a deadly weapon following inquest proceedings.
