DJ Fenner and Javi Gomez de Liaño formed a lethal 1-2 combo and steered Strong Group Athletics past Qatar’s Team B, 81-54, for their third straight win in the 44th William Jones Cup at the Taipei Heping Basketball Gymnasium in Taiwan Tuesday, July 15.
Fenner led the assault and scored 16 points in the first half alone before de Liaño took the wheel and completely rolled over the Qataris in the remaining frames where they built a huge separation en route to victory.
With their convincing triumph, the Philippine-based club improved its slate to 3-0 – one game behind fellow unblemished and current leader Bahrain (4-0) – while Qatar absorbed its third loss against one win at ninth spot.
It was also the largest winning margin for SGA compared to its first two wins over Chinese Taipei Blue (67-56) and Japan’s U25 Team (79-67) in the annual cagefest.
Kiefer Ravena is anticipated to suit up for the first time after a dream-come-true trip for a shoe brand's event in Greece when the defending champion battles Fil-Aussie James Spencer and Australia United (2-2) this Wednesday, July 16.
Spencer previously played for three seasons for the University of the Philippines including its historic title win in UAAP’s 84th edition.
The 6-foot-6 Fenner finished with 18 points on top of seven rebounds and one assist, while de Liaño also cashed in 18 off a 4-of-8 shooting from beyond the arc.
Ian Miller and Dave Ildefonso also impressed with 10 and eight points, respectively. Andre Roberson, for his part, had a quiet seven points but it went along with 10 rebounds, three assists, two steals and two blocks.
Starring for Qatar was the 17-year-old Abdulla Mousa who shone with 21 points, nine rebounds, six assists, and three steals. Mubarak Jama added 10 points.
SGA got off to a strong start as it took an early 23-11 lead with Fenner showing the light for the Charles Tiu-guided squad.
Qatar, though, tried to fight back with Mousa showing promise on both ends and dazzled in front of his much-older teammates and foes but his effort, unfortunately, went down the drain as SGA turned on its jets and left them dramatically in the second half.
