Solons reiterate need for 'proportional' response after China's sanction vs Tolentino
House members on Monday, July 14, reiterated their call for a "proportional" response from the Philippine government regarding China's sanction on former senator and fierce Beijing critic Francis Tolentino.
Bicol Saro Party-list Rep. Terry Ridon and Manila 3rd district Rep. Joel Chua gave these remarks two days after the local celebration of the ninth anniversary of the Philippines' arbitral case victory on the West Philippine Sea (WPS) issue.
If China has banned Tolentino from entering the mainland, Hong Kong and Macau, then the Philippines must do the same to high-level Chinese nationals, according to Ridon.
"Ang paninindigan po natin, dapat ho proportional, at talagang halos katapat ang tugon ng Pilipinas dito po sa ginawang travel sanction (We're really firm in our belief that our response must be proportional. And the Philippines' response must be the same with the travel sanction Beijing has imposed)," Ridon said in a press conference.
"Kailangan po, in the same manner ay makapag-impose din po tayo ng travel restrictions, travel sanctions sa mga high-level Chinese nationals na talaga namang pong nag-sespread ng disinformation, misinformation sa usapin po ng [WPS] (We need to impose, in the same manner, travel restrictions on high-level Chinese nationals who are spreading disinformation and misinformation regarding the WPS)," he added.
Ridon first made such call last week after learning of what happened to Tolentino.
Manila 3rd district Rep. Joel Chua agreed with Ridon.
"You are not Filipino, if you do not share the same sentiment," Chua said, referring to former House Speaker Martin Romualdez, who declared Sunday that the WPS belongs to the Philippines.
Romualdez had called on the people to remain united in asserting the country's rights over the body of water.
For Chua, it is not only the obligation of House lawmakers and government officers to defend the country's rights, but also of each Filipino.
