PRO-NIR cites Negros Oriental cops for making Dumaguete City safe

World Travel Index names provincial capital safest city to visit in Philippines

BACOLOD CITY – The Police Regional Office-Negros Island Region (PRO-NIR) cited the recent declaration by the World Travel Index that Dumaguete City in Negros Oriental is the Safest City to Visit in the Philippines in the first half of 2025.
With a high safety score of 81.36 out of 100 percent, Dumaguete outperformed other major cities in the country, including Davao City, which placed second with a score of 80.73.
Police Brig. Gen. Arnold Thomas Ibay, PRO-NIR regional director, commended the Negros Oriental Police Provincial Office led by Police Col. Ronan Claravall for its unwavering commitment to maintaining public safety, particularly for tourists visiting the province.
Ibay, in a statement, emphasized that such achievements demonstrate the positive impact of continuous peace and order initiatives not only for locals but also for every traveler who visits Negros Oriental.
The PRO-NIR said that according to the Dumaguete Safety Profile from the World Travel Index, both locals and visitors consistently report a strong sense of safety throughout the city, day or night.
The city boasts very low risks of theft, violence, harassment, scams, and drug-related incidents, the PRO-NIR said.
This recognition followed Dumaguete’s previous accolade in 2023, when an international travel advisory site ranked it the fourth safest city in the Philippines.
These recurring acknowledgments not only enhances Dumaguete’s reputation but also strengthens the NIR’s status as a secure and attractive tourist destination, the PRO-NIR said.
The PRO-NIR said that the latest recognition reflects the steadfast collaboration between the Dumaguete City government, the Philippine National Police, community volunteers, and various stakeholders all working tirelessly to maintain peace and safety for residents and tourists.
Dumaguete’s reputation as a top-tier destination is not new, according to the local police.
In 2018, the Philippine Retirement Authority named Dumaguete as the Best Place to Retire in the Philippines, with an impressive score of 97.48 based on global standards set by the United Nations, World Health Organization, and International Living.
In 2014, Forbes Magazine listed Dumaguete as among the Top 5 Best Places to Retire in the World, reinforcing its nickname as the “City of Gentle People.”
These accolades underscore the dedication, integrity, and hard work of the police personnel of PRO-NIR, a standard of excellence truly worthy of emulation, the police said.
Following this achievement, the Negros Oriental Provincial Tourism Board said that Dumaguete continues to draw local and international visitors looking for a safe and unforgettable travel experience.
