SYNC: Upcoming P-pop group aims for the stars
P-pop group SYNC
New P-Pop group SYNC is poised to make waves in the local and global music scene. Short for "Simple Yet Not Common," they're more than a performing group. They represent a new model for homegrown pop stars: independent, self-managed, and passionately collaborative.
With ages ranging from 20 to 25, the seven-person Gen Z group has the following members: Clyn, Sevi, Asa, Drew, Jai, Pen, and Lee. To show their commitment for their career in the long term, they decided last year to live under one roof and divide responsibilities. They have a dance unit, vocal unit and a rap unit.
In their own version of the Big Brother house, they not only train and rehearse but also share the duties of daily life. From styling and songwriting to social media management, each member takes on a specific role, making their journey a real team effort. The group agrees in unison that living together helps them understand each other, both as artists and as brothers.
As an example, their debut single "Balang Araw," was based on a heartfelt note written by Pen to the rest of the group - a message of perseverance that eventually took form as a pop anthem about holding onto dreams. Their follow-up track "PLS (Para Lang Sa 'yo)," composed by Drew, captures the raw feelings of young love.
While many local acts remain under traditional management, SYNC is proud to be independently run under their own Sirius Entertainment. Despite being relatively new, they've already mapped out an ambitious five-year plan that includes a series of music releases, provincial and international tours, and, eventually, mentoring the next generation of artists.
Strategic Partnerships
SYNC is also catching attention in the beauty space, thanks to their ongoing partnership with skincare brand, Wow Glow of beauty CEO Mariz Villanueva. The group credits their youthful aesthetic and confidence in part to a regular skincare routine, something they speak openly and proudly about.
“For us, taking care of yourself is part of being a good performer. Confidence starts with how you feel about yourself," the members explained after participating in the recent BTS Army 12th anniversary fan gathering in SM North EDSA's Skydome.
The members aim to break stereotypes surrounding male grooming and they do swear by some of the brand's products, like the mineral sunscreen. They stressed that they don't judge other people who opt for aesthetic enhancements, emphasizing that beauty is subjective and that every artist has the right to feel empowered in their own skin.
SYNC’s growing popularity isn't confined to local shores. They are now set to make their first international appearance through a collaboration with the Miss Universe franchises under the House of Yugen. They will be singing one of the pageant's official soundtracks and it will be premiered during the finale show of Miss Universe Pakistan and Egypt.
“To be part of an international event which will be held in the Maldives is a big deal for us. We will represent not just ourselves but Filipino talent as a whole," SYNC pointed out.
Inspired by SB19
While determined to carve their own path, SYNC is vocal about the artists who paved the way. Chief among them is SB19, the first P-Pop group to gain massive mainstream and international success. They also cited BTS and even OPM legends like Gary V and TJ Monterde.
"We're really thankful to the torchbearers of P-Pop like SB19 because they paved the way for the journey of our new generation. We want to follow their footsteps but in order to grow Filipino music, we must also carve our own identity and create our own path," Pen explained.
With their name, message, and music all in step with their goals, SYNC isn’t just chasing stardom. They’re inviting the Starbursts, as their fandom is known, to grow with them. As their official greetings state: "Let the stars align. We are SYNC!"
