Actor Jake is radiating fitness and charisma as he embarks on the promotional journey for his highly anticipated Prime Video series, "What Lies Beneath." His toned physique is turning heads, capturing the attention of fans and media alike.
"I have to lose weight for 'What Lies Beneath.' It's easier when you want a transformation. Once you change your body type, whether it's weight loss or weight gain, everything else follows," said Jake when asked about body transformation for a specific role during an interview for Star Magic Spotlight held in Quezon City recently.
Jake added, "For me, it's part of my process to transform. That's why I enjoy acting. I challenge myself to make it different."
At 37, Jake is proud that he has never undergone any surgery to enhance his body, including his teeth. Recently, a netizen mocked his pearly white teeth, claiming they weren't natural at all.
"I just wanted to let you know that I haven't had anything done — not even my teeth or plastic surgery. I'm proud of that.
'But I can't promise anything, when I reach 45 or 50, I might have some improvements. For now, I am proud of the fact that 100 percent has not been done," Jake said.
Jake embraced a health-conscious lifestyle, dedicating himself to taking great care of his body.
"I work out every day. I don't drink alcohol, and it's been four years. I haven't had meat in 10 years. I am not recommending it to everyone. I have quit cigarette smoking, but it makes a difference when you quit alcohol.
"My usual routine is to wake up at 5 in the morning. And then I work out. I read my script and head to the set, regardless of whether it's a 7 a.m. call time. But if it's a 5 a.m. call time, I wake up at 3 a.m. I run for 20 to 30 minutes. And then I lift weights for 20 minutes," Jake also said.
Jake enjoys having tattoos on his body; however, he covers them for specific roles.
"Dumami na siya over five years. But you know my makeup artist, Kat, has to cover everything. It depends on the role.
"I have a tattoo that means so much to me, The Mastery. It's a book by Robert Green. That's one of my favorite books. That's how I live my life as an actor. I try to get better every single day," Jake said.
After 27 years in the entertainment industry, Jake looks back on his journey with humility. Even with his successes and experiences, he feels he has not fully mastered his craft. He has a strong desire to grow, which pushes him to explore new levels and areas in his art.
"There are still a lot of things that I want to do in the theater. Like mastery, or being a master, it's like chasing perfection. You're never going to get there. But you try to be as close as you can and try your best as you can be," Jake said.
Jake has focused on method acting, which makes his approach to acting very personal and immersive. He explores the emotions of his characters, living their experiences to bring genuine authenticity to his performances. This commitment helps him improve his skills and enriches the art of acting, allowing him to connect with audiences deeply.
"The kontrabida role I am playing right now is different. I'm a method actor, and I like to immerse myself. Recently, I immersed myself in the Mandaluyong City Jail for seven months.
"Then in Batang Quiapo, kahit walang script yan, I immersed myself by watching or like pupunta na ako sa set ng maaga and feel things out. I have my ways and tools, but definitely, being a method actor is one of them," the award-winning actor said.
Jake expressed gratitude for never encountering angry fans in public regarding his role as a kontrabida.
"I've never experienced that in public, but you can get the heat online for playing kontrabida roles," he added.
