Leah Mosquera, a 49-year-old Filipina caregiver from Negros Occidental, succumbed to the injuries she sustained when an Iranian missile struck her Rehovot apartment last June 15. She was the only Filipino reported to have been severely injured during the attacks.
The news of her passing was shared to the embassy by her sister, Joy, who also works in Israel and had been taking care of Leah at the intensive care unit of the Shamir Medical Center.
The embassy expressed its heartfelt condolences to the entire Mosquera family in the Philippines.
“Lovingly called Ate Leah by her friends, she would have celebrated her 50th birthday this 29 July. Throughout her many years working in Israel, she dedicated herself to supporting her family back home — an enduring symbol of the courage and sacrifice of overseas Filipino workers around the world,” it said in a statement.
The embassy earlier reported that the Filipina caregiver underwent multiple surgeries since being rushed to the Shamir Medical Center, one of Israel's most advanced hospitals.
In a separate statement, the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) mourned Mosquera’s passing and assured that the Philippine Embassy in Israel “is now working on the repatriation of her remains.”
“As we mourn Ms. Mosquera's passing, the Department renews its call for the protection of civilians, including migrant workers, during times of conflict,” the DFA said.
Both the DFA and the embassy thanked the medical professionals who took care of the Filipina during her stay in the hospital, as well as the Filipino community members who offered comfort and support.
The embassy also expressed gratitude to the priests who visited and prayed over her.
