- As former chairperson of the Senate Committee on Health and Demography and as chairman of the Senate Blue Ribbon Committee, the senator said she has seen firsthand how vested interests can compromise public health laws that are already in place.
Senator Pia Cayetano joined on Friday, July 11 health , civil society and child rights advocates in opposing the appointment of Dave Gomez as secretary of the Presidential Communications Office (PCO).
Cayetano said appointing someone with longstanding ties to the tobacco industry to a top communications post sends the wrong message, “especially to our youth who remain the most vulnerable to the harmful influence of tobacco and vape products.”
“A person holding such a high-level position should have the independence to call out industries that act in ways harmful to our people. How can this be done if he has close ties with the very industry in question?” the senator pointed out.
As former chairperson of the Senate Committee on Health and Demography and as chairman of the Senate Blue Ribbon Committee, Cayetano said she has seen firsthand how vested interests can compromise public health laws that are already in place.
“I remain committed to fighting for accountability, transparency, and policies that prioritize the well-being of our people above all else,” she said.
“We’ve worked hard to build policies that protect the health of every Filipino family. These gains must not be reversed by decisions that open the door to industry interference, or worse, normalize it,” the lawmaker stressed.
President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. appointed Gomez, a seasoned journalist and corporate communications executive as the new chief of the PCO, replacing Jay Ruiz, also a former journalist.
Gomez was a former director general of the Philippine Information Agency (PIA) and communications director at Philip Morris Fortune Tobacco Corp. (PMFTC).
Among those who signed a joint statement calling on the powerful Commission on Appointments (CA) to reject Gomez’s appointment include Medical Action Group, Child Rights Network, Psoriasis Philippines, Healthy Philippines Alliance (HPA), HPA – Youth Network, Social Watch Philippines, Philippine Alliance of Patient Organizations, Youth for Mental Health Coalition, Philippine Legislators’ Committee on Population and Development Foundation Inc., and HealthJustice Philippines.
“Let us never forget: we are duty-bound to protect the next generation! That begins with keeping our institutions free from the influence of industries that profit from harm,” Cayetano emphasized.
