Senator Joseph Victor “JV” Ejercito on Friday, July 11 lauded the Philippine Amusement and Gaming Corp. (Pagcor) for finally heeding lawmakers and the public’s call by ordering operators of online gaming platforms to immediately take down their billboards and other gambling-related out-of-home advertisements.
“We welcome PAGCOR’s decision heeding our call to ban e-gambling or online sugal (gambling) ads outdoors, especially along highways,” Ejercito, one of the senators who pushed for the regulation of online gambling, said in a statement.
“Mahalagang hakbang ito para maproteksyunan ang publiko, lalo na ang kabataan, laban sa normalization at tila maluwag na pagtanggap ng pagsusugal sa ating mga komunidad (It’s a very important move to protect the public, especially the youth, against the normalization and seemingly comfortable acceptance of gambling in our communities),” he pointed out.
Just last Monday, Ejercito expressed his deep concern over the number of online gambling billboards along major highways in Metro Manila, particularly on Epifanio delos Santos Avenue (EDSA), noting that around six or seven out of every 10 billboards promote online gambling platforms.
“At sino ba ang target? Ang mga ordinaryong Pilipinong nagsusumikap, pero ngayo’y nahihikayat pang isugal ang kanilang kinikita (Who are the target? Just ordinary Filipinos who are striving (And who is the target? Ordinary Filipinos who work hard, but are now being encouraged to gamble their earnings),” he pointed out.
“Akala ng iba, simpleng billboard lang ito (Others think these are just simple billboards). But the truth is, they reflect the values we allow to dominate our public spaces and what we permit to become ‘normal’ in the eyes of the public, especially our youth,” Ejercito warned.
“Kung hindi tayo magiging maingat at pababayaan nating abutin ng ganitong ads ang kahit sino, tayo na mismo ang nagtutulak sa kanila patungo sa delikadong landas (If we are not careful and let these ads reach anyone, we ourselves are pushing them down a dangerous path). May this victory be the beginning of stricter regulation and control against online sugal,” he said.
Ejercito earlier pushed for stricter regulation of online gambling saying he prefers this to a total ban on online gambling.
The senator said he will push for a total ban on online gambling if the government fails at regulating the operations of these platforms.
