The University of the Philippines (UP) on Friday, July 11, strongly condemned the brutal killing of UP Diliman student Sophia Coquilla, who was found murdered in her home in Tagum City.
In an official statement, the university expressed profound sorrow over the tragic loss of Coquilla, who was killed on July 9. UP described the incident as a senseless act of violence that cut short a life full of promise.
“Such a violent act cut short a life full of promise and robbed the nation of a bright mind and future leader,” the statement read. “We grieve the loss of a daughter, classmate, friend, and Iskolar ng Bayan,” UP added.
UP extended its sympathies to Coquilla’s family and loved ones, assuring them of its support during this time of mourning.
The university also urged students and community members affected by the incident to seek support through UP’s psychosocial services.
Be vigilant
Meanwhile, the university emphasized the need for vigilance in protecting the lives and rights of all citizens and called for justice to be served without delay.
“This tragedy is also a stark reminder that we must remain vigilant in safeguarding the lives and rights of our fellow citizens, fostering a society where senseless harm is met with unwavering resolve and compassion,” UP said.
The university also called on law enforcement agencies to conduct a “swift, transparent, and comprehensive” investigation into the crime and to bring the perpetrators to justice. “No family should have to endure the anguish of unanswered questions, and no criminal act should remain unpunished,” it added.
As the national university, UP reaffirmed its commitment to upholding human rights and demanding accountability in the face of violence.
“We stand united in pursuing the conviction of those who commit such heinous acts,” the statement continued.
“As we continue to work for a society that protects human life and keeps families safe in their homes, today, we demand justice for Sophia,” UP said.
Coquilla’s death has sparked an outpouring of grief and calls for action from students, alumni, and advocates across the country.
