The Philippine men’s rugby team roared past the defending champion Singapore, 37-20, in the 2025 Unions Cup at the Kaohsiung National Stadium in Taiwan Wednesday, July 9.
Competing in their first-ever Unions Cup, the Volcanoes erupted right away after securing a 20-8 cushion in the first half which was enough to dictate the tempo in the second part to rout the Singaporeans and book their ticket in the finals where they will meet Thailand.
The Thai bets earlier pulled off a 20-19 escape against the host Chinese Taipei in the opener of the premier 15-a-side senior men’s rugby meet.
The host nation will face Singapore in their battle-for-third clash set Saturday, July 12, at the same venue.
The Unions Cup was inaugurated last year with the aim of promoting teams across Asia.
The Philippine Volcanoes are composed of team captain Kai Kristian Stroem and vice skipper Craig Wallace as they banner the forefront alongside Thomas Reyes, James Ryan, Lawrence Beboso, Kian Mulholland, Dylan Davies, Christopher Flores, Edlen Hernandez, Hamis Seddon, Vincent Young, Judd Greenhalgh, Ned Stephenson, Michael Blatchies, and Patrice Olivier.
The reserves are Fausto Eizmendi, Ken Mellorin, JM Cardenas, Mathew Bellenie, Connor Browne, Johnathan Greenwood, Kohei Mitsuhashi, and Jovan Masalunga with head coach Josh Sutcliffe, assistant Tommy Gilbert, team manager Lalaine Bacus and Physiotherapists David Adamson and Jun Whei Cheah.
