DAVAO CITY – The Balay Dangupan inaugurated on Wednesday afternoon, July 9, the Rodrigo Duterte Academic Building in honor of former President Rodrigo Duterte’s lifelong commitment to child welfare and education here.
Acting Mayor Sebastian Z. Duterte and acting Vice Mayor Rodrigo Duterte II led the inauguration.
Construction of the academic facility began in March 2024 — coinciding with former President Duterte’s birthday — and finished a year later.
Balay Dangupan is a city-run shelter for children in crisis and also serves as a functional space for learning.
Mayor Duterte encouraged wards of Balay Dangupan to carry forward the values instilled by the former President.
“Let us continue with life and with what PRRD started. Let us not stop just because he is not here with us. It is our responsibility to continue what he started. It is our obligation to ourselves, our family, and the entire country,” Mayor Duterte said.
He encouraged them to continue striving hard for themselves and loved ones and fight for their country, assuring them of his continued support as their father figure. “Go to school so that your lives will be better. Don’t worry, I will send you to school.”
Vice Mayor Duterte described the initiative as a meaningful tribute to his grandfather who championed the rights and welfare of vulnerable children throughout his public service.
“We did not expect that, with our friends’ help, hard work, and genuine service here, they would open their doors as a symbol of his enduring commitment to education and child welfare,” the acting vice mayor said.
He hopes that Balay Dangupan would continue to serve as a nurturing environment and that the new building would become a sanctuary of learning for those it shelters.
Julie Dayaday, head of the City Social Welfare and Development Office, recalled former President Duterte’s unwavering support for Balay Dangupan.
Dayaday said the former President has been supporting Balay Dangupan since the facility started and they will never forget his legacy.
Balay Dangupan has served as a refuge for children affected by trauma, abuse, or abandonment. Many former residents have led successful lives, with some now working abroad or serving their communities.
The opening ceremony was also attended by local officials, child protection advocates, long-time Duterte allies, and community leaders.
