Bagong Henerasyon (BH) Party-list Rep. Robert Nazal is prodding authorities to take decisive action against illegal online gaming operators that have been identified by the Philippine Amusement and Gaming Corporation (Pagcor).
"Panahon na para wakasan ang online gambling dahil marami ng buhay at pamilya sinira nito. Hindi po natin hahayaang magpatuloy pa ito. Ang Bagong Henerasyon Party-list po ay nag-aakda na ng panukalang batas para ipagbawal ang online gambling," Nazal said in a Facebook post Tuesday, July 8.
(It’s time to put an end to online gambling, as it has destroyed countless lives and families. We will not allow this to continue. The Bagong Henerasyon Party-list is now drafting a proposed law to ban online gambling.)
"We therefore call on the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP), the National Telecommunications Commission (NTC), the Games and Amusement Board (GAB), the [Pagcor], governors, mayors, and the Philippine National Police (PNP) to permanently shut down the over 100 illegal online gaming operators Pagcor has identified," said the neophyte legislator.
According to Nazal, shutting down these illegal gaming and betting entities does not need any new law from Congress.
"Actions against them must be taken now," he said.
Pagcor said many of the illegal operators are based overseas. The NTC and the Department of Justice (DOJ) have enough powers to block their websites, broadcasts, and mobile apps, Nazal reckoned.
He said the Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) must order all the governors and mayors to raid every illegal gaming operation, whether online or onsite.
On the other hand, Nazal said the Department of Education (DepEd) must make sure that on-campus Internet and computers in public and private schools are not used to access online gambling apps and websites.
"The BSP must order all banks, electronic wallets, and e-payment entities to block all online gambling. Both the online gaming operators and gamblers have found ways to circumvent the 'know your customer' measures of e-wallets and e-payments. The BSP and banks should be aware of this and execute effective countermeasures," he added.
The BH solon also said that Pagcor and the NBI must work together to make sure that Pagcor licensees do not have illegal online gambling "side hustles".
