Fourteen taxi units were flagged by law enforcers and airport personnel for alleged unauthorized (colorum) operation and overcharging of passengers within the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) Complex on Tuesday, July 8.
The crackdown, led by the Philippine National Police – Aviation Security Group (PNP AVSEGROUP), took place from 1 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. and resulted in the impoundment of 14 taxi units whose drivers were found violating existing transportation regulations, primarily due to breach of franchise conditions and illegal fare practices.
The PNP AVSEGROUP said its teams focused on identifying and apprehending taxi drivers involved in overcharging, unauthorized contracting of passengers, refusal to convey, and operating without proper franchise authority.
The erring drivers were issued a Temporary Operator's Permit (TOP) by the Land Transportation Office (LTO) for their violations.
The violators will be subjected to appropriate penalties and administrative sanctions in accordance with LTO and relevant transport regulations.
The seized vehicles were initially brought to the AVSEGROUP Headquarters in Pasay City for documentation before being turned over to the Central Office of the LTO in Quezon City for proper disposition.
The crackdown was jointly conducted by the PNP AVSEGROUP, LTO, New NAIA Infra Corp (NNIC), and Manila International Airport Authority (MIAA) amid reports that some taxis operating in NAIA Complex are charging their passengers with extremely high fares.
