Tanay road rage shooting leaves 2 hurt, senior citizen suspect arrested
Two individuals onboard a pickup truck were injured after being shot multiple times by a senior citizen motorist in a road rage incident in Barangay Kutyo, Tanay, Rizal on Monday, July 7.
According to Rizal Police Provincial Office (Rizal PPO) Chief Col. Feloteo Gonzalgo, the suspect, who was driving his Mazda hatchback, aggressively cut the lane of the victims' pickup truck causing the two vehicles to collide. This prompted the suspect to get out of his car and confront the pickup's driver.
The suspect returned to his vehicle, retrieved his .40 caliber pistol, and shot the pickup truck and its four passengers multiple times.
Police recover the suspect's pistol, live ammunition, bolo, and combat knife inside his vehicle after the shooting.
Feloteo said the pickup's driver was hit multiple times in different parts of his body, before the suspect switched to the other side of the vehicle and fired shots again, hitting the vehicle's front passenger on the foot.
After the assault, the suspect tried to escape and led responding police officers to a 15-minute chase before being cornered at a checkpoint in Morong, Rizal.
The suspect yielded his .40 caliber pistol, live ammunition, two huge knives, and even a police blinker.
“May blinker pa sa loob ng sasakyan, para bang talagang ginagamit na niya sa kanyang pagtakas, for example, para mabilis siyang makaalis (Police found a blinker inside the vehicle which he seems to be using to evade the authorities),” Gonzalgo said.
The suspect admitted to the crime and said that he had done it because of extreme anger, but declined to further comment.
He is now detained at the Tanay Municipal Police Station and is facing charges of frustrated murder, reckless imprudence resulting in serious physical injuries and damage to properties, and illegal possession of firearms and ammunition.
Meanwhile, the police said the pickup truck's passenger had already been discharged from the hospital while the driver is still recovering from his injuries.
