Philippine serpent eagle rescued in Sorsogon

LEGAZPI CITY – A Philippine serpent eagle (Spilornis holospilus) found in Donsol, Sorsogon was turned over to the Department of Environment and Natural Resources in Bicol Monday.
In a media release Tuesday, Francisco Milla, DENR Bicol Regional Executive Director, said the eagle, appearing weak and dehydrated, was rescued in Barangay Dancalan.
A concerned citizen, Lalaine Herrera Amor, provided care to the eagle for about three weeks.
"After being released back into the wild following its recovery, the eagle repeatedly returned, leading her to contact the DENR for proper handling and rehabilitation," Milla said.
DENR Bicol transported it to the Albay Park and Wildlife for further assessment and care, in preparation for its eventual release back to its natural habitat.
Milla urged the public to participate in wildlife conservation by reporting similar incidents to the authorities.
“We encourage everyone to promptly report any wildlife in need of assistance to the DENR. This is not just the responsibility of the agency but of the entire community,” he said.
The Philippine serpent eagle is endemic to the Philippines. It is a relatively small raptor typically found in riparian forests, foothills, cultivated lands, and forest edges.
It is listed under the “Other Wildlife Species” category according to Section 4 of DENR Administrative Order No. 2019-09, and is currently classified as “Least Concern” by the International Union for Conservation of Nature. However, its population trend is noted to be decreasing. (PNA)
