People driving HSBC Philippines for 150 years and beyond
In a constantly evolving financial landscape, the strength of an organization lies not just in its systems or strategies—but in the people who shape its purpose and progress.

In today’s rapidly shifting financial services landscape, organizational resilience depends not only on strategy and innovation—but also on people. At HSBC Philippines, this belief is more than cultural; it’s operational. The bank’s long-term success has been built on individuals who lead by example, perform at the highest levels, and earn the respect of peers across departments.

Unlike traditional spotlights that focus solely on tenure, HSBC’s approach highlights individuals whose value is seen not just in how long they’ve stayed—but in how consistently they’ve grown, contributed, and lived the values that define the HSBC brand.

Growing with the Bank—and Growing Others Along the Way
Rossana Yu just graduated from university when she joined HSBC on an entry-level position and was eager to start earning her own income. “I came with an open mind, with no expectations or demands,” she says. Twenty-five years hence, she has moved roles across corporate and retail banking roles and is now AVP – Wealth Relationship Manager, relishing her customer-facing role, dealing with various clients from all parts of the world and all walks of life.
Minuch Anson with team
Minuch Anson first gravitated toward HSBC because of its strong brand. What kept her there, however, was the challenge and inspiration she found in the people around her. From feeling intimidated early on to eventually becoming Director for Institutional Sales, Markets and Securities Services, Minuch credits her growth to a culture that values strategic thinking, encourages collaborative spirit and knows how to get things done.
Kris Milan with the COO Office team
Kris Milan came from a more relaxed work environment before joining HSBC, where he found the structure and challenge he was looking for. Over 19 years, he’s moved across six departments and now serves as VP for Business Management, Strategy, and Planning where he continues to thrive thanks to the opportunities in a place that keeps pushing him to learn.
Nikolai Pimentel with his teammates from Risk department
Meanwhile, economics graduate Nikolai Pimentel’s first choice for an employer was HSBC for its global network and foundational heritage in Asia. He looks back to days when he was lucky to get 20 minutes for lunch, because technology then hardly kept up with the high transaction volume. Much has changed since then. Today he is VP for Risk Appetite, Reporting, and Strategy.
Cheryl Milan with her Corporate Banking teammates
For her part, Cheryl Milan started as a member of the Finance payments team and assumed different roles in different groups over the past 25 years and is now VP for the Credit Analysis Unit of the Banking team.
The Why Behind the Stay
Across their stories, a few themes emerge: exceptional mentorship, opportunities for growth, and a shared belief in HSBC’s core values—We Succeed Together. We Take Responsibility. We Get It Done.
Ross, Minuch, Kris, Nikolai, and Cheryl are just a few of the employees who have found countless reasons for staying – and growing – at HSBC Philippines. They point to the bank’s conscious efforts to nurture talent, foster a corporate atmosphere that is conducive to professional and personal advancement, and live out ideals of inclusion and diversity as the reason for their longevity.

Their stay at HSBC is marked by the mentorship they got from their seniors, which came in different ways: from managers who taught one to be strong and resilient, to another who pushed them to apply for certain positions and who inspired them to think critically and strategically, to one who reminded them that putting the customer experience first, as well as using common sense, will guide them to the right response during difficult situations. Yet another advised them to stay balanced while “go[ing] out and build[ing] their callouses.” Another manager was cool, compassionate, relatable, and approachable, leading his team members to stay on even amid difficult times. Teamwork and collaboration are strong points emphasized at HSBC. Minuch recalls a mentor telling her HSBC does not breed superstars but good team players. “The culture of succeeding together is very strong at HSBC,” she says. That culture of collaboration is deeply ingrained. “As a result of everyone’s participation, and everyone doing their best, we are able to achieve great things,” adds Rossana.
Over the years, these officers’ ascent on the corporate ladder was driven by their adherence to the Bank’s values: “We succeed together, We take responsibility, We value difference, We get it done.” These are not just buzz words to distinguish the HSBC brand from others, but a mantra that all employees live by within the confines of the office and beyond. “’We get it done resonates with me very well,” says Minuch. “I’m proud to say that I am a part of this drive to make a difference for our stakeholders and help build a good future for the next generation,” says Kris.

More Than a Workplace
Beyond professional growth and mentorship, many of HSBC’s employees speak of a workplace that has shaped them personally as much as professionally. For many, the bank has become more than just an office or a stepping stone—it feels like a second home, one that has seen them through milestones, life changes, and meaningful connections.
Here, they’ve learned financial wisdom not from a seminar, but from experience—how to save, invest, and manage their money wisely. They’ve gained confidence in how they communicate, building strong relationships with clients and colleagues alike.
Some have spent more than half their lives at HSBC, with the bank’s values becoming deeply ingrained in the way they live and work. It’s where lasting friendships were formed—and in some cases, where life partners were met.

Diversity, equality, and inclusion aren’t just corporate buzzwords—they’re values actively reflected in the workplace culture. Employees speak proudly of how their differences have been embraced and how opportunities to grow—professionally and personally—have always been within reach. From earning graduate degrees to taking on new challenges, the support they’ve received along the way has made a lasting impression. “I take pride in working for this organization that views differences in attributes and experiences as a strength and a driver to a thriving workplace,” says Kris.
For others, the experience of working at HSBC has been as enriching as a formal business education—if not more. For Minuch, being in HSBC is better than any executive MBA she could have taken. Lessons in leadership, resilience, and empathy have been shaped not in the classroom, but in daily interactions and real-world decision-making.
At HSBC, career development goes hand in hand with life development. And for many, that’s what makes the journey truly meaningful.
The Human Advantage
HSBC Philippines’ financial strength and global heritage have long positioned it as a leader in banking. “What truly sustains that reputation is our people – their grit, growth, resilience and ability to live out the company’s values in moments big and small. I myself have been in the bank for 32 years, and have grown not only in rank but also in responsibility holding roles in various markets, including being in the Philippines in the 90s and serving as President and CEO since 2022. The growth of our people helps shape the bank’s culture while helping our teams and clients succeed. After all, the best bank, or any organization for that matter, is built by the best people” shared Sandeep Uppal, CEO and Head of Banking.

They represent different departments, backgrounds, and career stages, but what connects them is a shared sense of purpose and a workplace that has consistently made room for learning, inclusion, and meaningful relationships. This is what it looks like when an organization invests in its people—and when those people, in turn, invest back. “It is here where I experienced joy, defeat, sadness, and triumph,” says Ross. “I cannot imagine being in any other organization.”
