ILOILO CITY – Newly installed governors and mayors in Western Visayas region will undergo orientation on disaster risk reduction and management (DRRM).
Office of Civil Defense-6 Regional Director Raul Fernandez said the orientation is important for the new local chief executives (LCEs) to enable them to ease the impact of disasters.
Many LCEs were reelected. There are two new governors – Paolo Javier of Antique and Maria Lucille Ledesma Nava of Guimaras – and several new mayors, including Raisa Treñas-Chu of Iloilo City.
The DRRM for governors and mayors was tentatively scheduled for August after the orientation conducted by the Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG).
The OCD-6, as the head of the Regional DRRM Office, has prepared for the “habagat” or southwest monsoon season.
It has prepositioned non-food essential items such as shelter kits, tents, and hygiene packs for evacuation and immediate relief.
Fernandez said these were prepositioned in Philippine Army headquarters across Panay Island – Camp Hernandez of the 301st Infantry Brigade in Dingle town, Iloilo province; Camp Jizmundo of the 12th Infantry Battalion in Banga town, Aklan province; and Camp Fullon of the 6th Regional Community Defense Center (6th RCDG) in San Jose de Buenavista town, Antique province – and the regional capital of Iloilo City.
The OCD-6 is continuing capacity building training of LGUs in Western Visayas region on the enhanced pre-assessment of DRRM.
