A man who suffered electric shock and burns after climbing a Meralco post in Muntinlupa last July 5 is being treated at the Philippine General Hospital (PGH).
Muntinlupa Mayor Ruffy Biazon said the man, who has mental health issues, is confined at the PGH burn unit and was given antibiotics to fight off infection. His burns were cleaned and treated.
During the flag-raising ceremony on July 7, Biazon said the city government will provide assistance to the patient, especially for his mental health.
He said the man has been undergoing mental health therapy under a unit of the city government.
The man was identified by authorities as Dennis, 45, a resident of Barangay Putatan.
At about 10 p.m. last Saturday, the man was seen walking along electrical cables in front of a building near the Muntinlupa City hall.
Fire and rescue personnel arrived and tried to rescue him.
However, he continued walking along the cables until he reached an electric post and climbed it. Moments later, he suffered an electric shock and sparks were seen.
Electricity was temporarily shut down as personnel used a manlifter to bring the man down from the Meralco post.
The mayor, who was on the scene last July 5, said the man suffered burns on 30 percent of his body when he touched a live wire. The man was initially brought to the Medical Center Muntinlupa for treatment but a doctor recommended that he be transferred to the PGH.
Personnel from the Muntinlupa City Department of Disaster Resilience and Management brought the man to the PGH.
Biazon lamented how some netizens were insensitive to what happened to the man through their online comments.
One netizen commented, “Mayor biazon...dapat dyan merun kaun airsoft na 650 ang rps or mas mataas pa...malamang sa malamang aaray yan para bumaba (Mayor biazon...you should have an airsoft gun with 650 rps or higher...it will surely sting him and force him to go down).”
Another wrote, “Sana hinayaan nyo na lng makuryente (I hope you just let him get electrocuted).”
Others complained about the brownout. Some of the comments are “Perwisyo oras na ng pahinga biglang mawalan kuryente (It’s inconvenient at a time when the power goes out when you are resting)” “Gawan nyo Ng praan at walang ilaw! (Do something because there is no electricity!),” and “Perwesyo sa mga natutulog eh (It’s inconvenient to those who are sleeping).”
