IEMOP: Energy grid to add 14 new power plants by year-end

The Independent Electricity Market Operator of the Philippines (IEMOP) announced that several new power plants, including both renewable and conventional energy facilities, are expected to come online in the second half of 2025.

IEMOP revealed in a media briefing that 14 power projects are slated for testing and commissioning in the remaining months of 2025, with the majority being solar facilities.
These projects include the 11-megawatt (MW) Capas bunker C-fired diesel plant, along with several solar projects: the 42.9 megawatt-peak (MWp) Bongabon solar plant, a 23.776 MWp Bongabon solar project, and the 36.6 MWp RASLAG IV solar project.
Also included are the 63.96 MWp Cordon solar project, the 64.206 MWp Maragondon solar plant, the 137 megawatt-alternating current (MWac) Calatrava solar power project, and the 27 MWp Dagohoy solar power project.
Other facilities expected online are the Bac-Man energy storage system, the 4 MW Colasi mini hydroelectric plant, the Tongonan battery energy storage system, the Bago binary geothermal power plant, the 60.702 MW Bohol in-island diesel power plant, and the 68.69 megawatt-hour (MWh) Pitogo battery energy storage system.
Most of these projects are strategically located in Luzon, which is expected to significantly impact the region's supply margin.
While market operators are optimistic about the upcoming facilities, Isidro Cacho Jr., IEMOP head of trading operations, noted that planned maintenance works in the third quarter of the year could affect future pricing. However, he assured that any price increase would likely be minor.
Cacho attributed the positive supply margins to the additional plants and a decrease in unplanned outages. “If you are following the market, [unplanned outages] reduced compared to last year, definitely,” he stated. “You also see the effect on prices compared to last year, because it's lower [this year].”
He further explained, “Although by the third quarter, there will be a factor of additional maintenance, but we don't see a significant increase. If it goes up, maybe it will play around ₱4 to ₱5 because of the ample margin we are seeing in the market. We haven't experienced secondary price cap, so that's really good for all of us.”
