It's true! Dulce's powerful singing voice can shatter speakers and generators
It may sound like a scene from a cartoon series, but the singing voice of OPM icon Dulce has shattered speakers and glasses.
Dulce made the revelation during an interview with the entertainment press for the announcement of nominees for the 8th Eddys Awards, held recently at Rampa Drag Bar in Quezon City.
'It happened on several occasions. Hindi yun joke. Nag-shake yung chandelier and yung walls. Nahulog din yung speaker at pumutok ang generator. Sumabog talaga, and everything died,' said Dulce.
Dulce added, 'Hindi ko talaga alam bakit nagkaganun. At some point, the speakers and generators appeared to lack the necessary wattage. So when I sang several times, the whole place went dark.'
Despite this oddity, Dulce said she continued to perform. 'Some artists will walk out. I will never leave my audience.'
Requested songs
After 52 years in show business, Dulce has taken care of her voice.
'Praise God for my singing voice. But you know, when you accept the gift of singing, dapat talagang alagaan ang voice mo. Wala naman kasi akong bisyo,' she said.
Modesty aside, Dulce said that she never ran out of gigs these days, even though people seldom see her on television.
'You know kung wala akong concert, or corporate events, ang mga engagement ko ay singing for old parents or officials. For example, an 80th birthday or a 90th birthday. Meron pa ngang 100th birthday. They want me to sing 'Maalaala Mo Kaya.'
'Nagkaroon pa yun ng run sa 'MMK' for many years, it left a mark on the older people. They used my version for 12 years. Then later, it went to Teleradyo, Dulce said.
Dulce added, 'I don't have millions. I don't even have half a million. But the Lord provides. I think I am here for a purpose. I am here to pray for the country. That's why I'm still here.'
With the changing landscape of entertainment, Dulce said she has no intentions of meeting the current generation in introducing her music.
'Realization talaga yan ng every artist na lilipas ang panahon. Nasanay sila sa Top 40. That was from the 70s up to what year? Na dapat daw ma-memorize mo ang Top 40.
'Sabi ko struggle naman yun. So kung ano lang ang alam ko yun ang kakantahin ko. Later, a fellow recording artist told me that they shouldn't have focused on Top 40 songs for their repertoire.
'I just sing songs that are close to my heart. Sayang ang three minutes na kinanta mo dahil daw uso, but it doesn't mean anything to you. I go for the meaning of a song so that I can relay something to the audience.
'There are people who will tell you that some songs affect them. If I love the music, I will sing it. Hinahanap nila yung mga old songs. So now I don't prepare anymore for a new song to please the new people.
'Sometimes, there are old songs which I think I have been singing multiple times, but still they request it. They miss it. I will make them listen to what I have so that they can have a taste of what we have had in the past,' said Dulce.
Never again
Dulce recalled the time that she was forced to sing a song that she didn't like. She was told that she would be paid a hefty talent fee, and the fan wanted her to perform.
'Napilitan akong kantahin ang 'Better Days.' Unang una, I cannot relate to the song literally. I never experienced a silver-haired lola. Doon pa lang sa first line of the song, I cannot relate.
'I saw Dessa performing the song at ang galing niya. Hindi ako lalaban. I still sang it. I know I did well, but I am not going to sing it again. Hindi ako happy,' she said.
Dulce said that wealthy families have asked her to sing to a family member in a hospital bed.
'Favorite raw niya ako, so I sing in the hospital bed. Then meron ding party at dinala talaga yung hospital bed. After two weeks,' she died. 'They still got me to sing for the wake. Hanggang burial kumakanta pa ako,' she said.
