Jay Bryan Baricuatro settled for the silver medal after falling to hometown bet Sanzhar Tashkenbay in the men’s 50kg final at the 2025 World Boxing Cup in Astana, Kazakhstan, on Sunday, July 6.
The Talisay, Cebu native struggled to match Tashkenbay’s relentless pace and aggression, ultimately bowing via unanimous decision, 5-0.
All five judges scored the bout 30-27 in favor of the Kazakh fighter, who had also dominated Subkhan Mamedov of Azerbaijan in the semifinals.
Before his finals setback, Baricuatro showcased an impressive run, defeating Italy’s Salvatore Attrattivo in the opening round, India’s Jadumani Singh Mandengbam in the quarterfinals, and Australia’s Omer Izas in the semis.
