The Mathematics Trainers' Guild Phils. (MTG) announced on Saturday, July 5, the upcoming commencement of the Australian Mathematics Competition (AMC), which will be held in its training centers nationwide on Aug. 9. The event gives Filipino math wizards the chance to compete against more than 50,000 participants from over 20 countries.
According to MTG head Dr. Simon Chua, interested students from Grades 3 to 12 have until July 16 to register for the annual event, which has been conducted by the Canberra-based Australian Maths Trust since 1978.
“Our mathletes have been doing very well in the AMC. At least 16 Filipino students have had perfect scores in the contest. They will try to duplicate, if not improve, their impressive showing in the 2024 edition of AMC, Chua said.
Last year, up to 723 Filipinos students emerged as top scorers in the competition, out of more than 800 local participants.
Two Filipinos were named second best in their respective Southeast Asian divisions.
Adrian Jeric Ang of Xavier School scored 112 out of 120 points in the middle primary division, while Jerome Austin Te of Jubilee Christian Academy scored 105 out of 120 points in the middle secondary division.
The AMC had earlier acknowledged that Te scored 100 percent in the 2022 edition of the tilt.
Meanwhile, 27 students received High Distinction certificates, which are given to those in the top 3 percent of their year levels. Another 138 earned Credit Certificates for ranking in the top 55 percent of the primary division and the top 60 percent of the secondary division.
Up to 267 students received Proficiency Certificates for demonstrating competency in math problem solving.
The online contest paper consists of 30 multiple-choice questions arranged in increasing difficulty, covering topics such as basic arithmetic, algebra, geometry, fractions, ratios, statistics, and problem solving.
In the contest, participants can sharpen their math and critical thinking skills, compete with other best young minds, and win medals and prestigious awards.
“Our mathletes are ready to put their math problem-solving skills to the ultimate test in the AMC, Chua noted.
In 2024, some of the AMC-participating nations include China, Taiwan, France, Kazakhstan, New Zealand, Mongolia, Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand, Vietnam, Hong Kong, Macau, Brunei Darussalam, Uzbekistan, Romania, Philippines, and host Australia, among others.
